As highly sensitive people, it is so important that we are conscious about what we are putting on and in our bodies. Our bodies, including our skin, can be extremely sensitive to certain ingredients in skincare. Some of the ingredients in today’s skincare are quite harmful… I mean if you can’t eat it why would you put in on your skin… the largest organ of your body!
A few years ago, before I went vegan and became more aware of what I was putting onto and into my body, I would happily use any skincare, most of which would contain synthetic fragrance… the result – I had terrible acne all over my back and some on my face too. I would not leave the house without makeup on and was so self conscious about my back… I couldn’t wear any low-back tops. This resulted in me attempting every acne product out there, which were no good for my skin. My skin was irritated and inflamed and I wasn’t allowing it time to heal.
Slowly I started to introduce more natural products and finally I came across essential oils! The beauty of essential oils is that you can add them to so many things to create your perfect package of natural skincare products for your bathroom shelf. My skin is so much better now… I have no back acne yay!… and my scars are fading. Going natural has improved my skin greatly!
So you want to know how I make my own products? Ok! Get a pen and paper and start taking notes people!
- Cleanser – I use sesame oil to oil-cleanse my face and body. I know I was scared to put oil on my face too, but hear me out! The way oil-cleansing works is that like dissolves like, thus after you open your pores with a hot cloth, the oil, once applied, will help to clear out all the sebum (oils) from the pores. It literally melts away. Sesame oil has also been used for centuries as part of ayurvedic medicine to balance the bodies of anxious or flighty people (i.e. many HSPs). The special properties of the oil are said to be capable of crossing the blood brain barrier and thus can directly impact the brain in a positive way. If you don’t like the smell of sesame oil, you can alternatively use coconut oil or you can mask the smell by adding natural fragrance in the form of 2 drops of your favourite essential oil. I love to add orange essential oil, which also helps to lift the spirit in the morning time.
- Toner– So many generic toners are full of alcohol. Alcohol dries out the skin, impairing its ability to protect itself from infection, which can lead to acne. The toner I use is a 100% rose water organic spray from Atlantic aromatics. It’s so refreshing to spray on in the morning. Also, as the bottles are made of glass I choose to keep them and reuse them for other things such as cleaning products or natural perfume. An alternative is to make a green tea toner, just make it like you would a normal cup of green tea, add extra water, let it cool and transfer it to a spray bottle. Make sure to use organic tea! So much cheaper than buying a bottle of toner!
- Moisturizer– I use a blend of essential oils mixed in with a carrier oil. The carrier oil I use is jojoba oil, as it is very similar to the natural sebum we produce on our face but it is non-comodogenic, so it won’t block your pores like sebum sometimes does. I change the mix of essential oils every time I run out of the mixture in my dropper bottle. At the moment I am using a mixture of lemongrass, orange and rosemary oils, which are great for acne prone skin. I think next I will use a mixture of geranium, lavender and ylang ylang as these are more calming for the skin. I suggest looking up the properties of the different oils and picking the ones you think would best suit your skin type. Make sure you look up the correct amount needed for dilution, as these are powerful products that you don’t want to overdo. Let me know in the comments if you use any great smelling combination of oils!
- Face Mask– this is probably the simplest face mask with the most amazing effects… it’s Manuka honey! Ever heard how Manuka honey is great for strengthening the immune system when you have a cold? Well it does the same for your skin! Manuka honey is produced from medicinal plants native to New Zealand and that is why it has so many great properties. How I use it – I steam my face with a hot cloth and then apply the honey directly onto my face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Try not to lick it all off! It is amazing for reducing the appearance of scars and helps to even out skin tone. I have also noticed that it is excellent at clearing out blackheads, especially those pesky ones on the side of your nose!
